  122. I read Steve's posting shortly after pulling a new 733A out of the
  123. box, and tested the CTCSS.  I don't have a service monitor, so I can 
  124. only report what I'm hearing from a speaker, compared to the CTCSS
  125. sent by a couple other radios.  
  126.  
  127. The 733A CTCSS isn't a lot louder than the other radios, but it is
  128. distorted -- to distorted to be considered acceptable.  
  129.  
  130. In addition, the radio is not very good on intermod.  Right now its
  131. sitting on top of an Icom 2410.  I live in a fairly high intermod
  132. area, with several commercial towers within a mile.  The 2410 hears
  133. a bit of intermod on a few VHF channels -- its rarely a problem.  The
  134. 733 is hearing intermod on many more channels, both VHF and UHF, some
  135. of it very strong, and definitly a problem.

  137. Too bad -- the 733's got some nice bells and whistles.  But its not
  138. performing where it counts.

  173. Can someone do me a favor and look at the schematics?
  174. Did Kenwood do the same idiotic thing as Yaesu did with
  175. the FT-11/41R and use the CPU to generate the PL(TM for Mr.
  176. Beckman) tones?  My FT-41R generated a very poor quality
  177. PL tone, because of this method of generation.  Not only
  178. was it poor in quality, it was off frequency.  I finally
  179. had to force Yaesu to install a tone board, which generates
  180. the PL tone in addition to decoding.  This fixed everything.
  181. I'm just trying to figure out if this is what is the
  182. latest trend....

  193. There has been discussion here and on local repeaters about the Kenwood
  194. TM-733A's PL being "too loud".  After looking into it, and talking to
  195. Kenwood, here's the whole story.
  196.  
  197. Many 733's out there generate an audible hum when the PL encoder is 
  198. turned on.  Kenwood and its dealers are telling people who complain
  199. of this malady that it is because the "PL is up too high".  However,
  200. this isn't really the case.  The truth is that there is a noticeable
  201. hum *not on the PL frequency* that is induced when the PL encoder is
  202. turned on.  The real PL is there, and on the unit I tested, was
  203. in the ballpark as far as deviation goes, however, there was
  204. the additional tone/hum being generated at the same time, which made
  205. an accurate deviation reading difficult.
  206.  
  207. So, in a nutshell, there is a defect.  Turning down the PL deviation may 
  208. help lower the amplitude of the hum, but it is also going to lower the
  209. real PL tone as well.  The nominal value for PL deviation is 750 Hz,
  210. with 500 Hz and 1000 Hz being the limits.  Most amateur rigs that I've
  211. tested tend to be below the nominal 750 Hz value to begin with.  Turning
  212. down the PL even more to reduce the hum problem is going to keep 
  213. 733 users out of most PL'ed repeaters, so don't let a local service
  214. shop turn down the PL deviation.  Send bad 733's back to Kenwood directly
  215. so that they can fix the defect.
  216.  
  217. Users may note that the problem seems to appear on some repeaters, and
  218. not on others.  This can be due to several reasons.  First, the hum
  219. itself is down near the PL range.  On the unit I looked at, while
  220. generating a PL of 131.8 Hz, the hum was up around 260 Hz.  Most PL'ed
  221. repeaters filter out the PL that comes in the receiver via a high-pass
  222. filter with a cutoff around 300 Hz.  So, on repeaters configured as this,
  223. the hum may not be noticeable to listeners.  Other repeaters don't filter
  224. PL, either intentionally or unintentionally.  On repeaters like this,
  225. how loud the hum sounds will depend on what the low-frequency response
  226. of the system is.  Finally, on a small number of systems, a steep
  227. notch filter is used just on the PL frequency that needs to be filtered.
  228. So, the real PL tone is filtered out, but the hum is allowed to pass
  229. through and is apparent to listeners.  This is how our system is configured,
  230. which made it obvious to me that Kenwood was blowing smoke about the
  231. "PL being up too loud" since 733 users all had hums on their audio, even
  232. though the system PL (131.8 Hz) was being filtered properly (about -50 dB).
  233.  
  234. It may be possible that Kenwood is telling their dealers of the "PL up too
  235. high" problem just to save face rather than admitting that they left a
  236. seemingly obvious problem slip through the cracks during product testing.
  237. When I asked them straight up what the story was, the person I talked
  238. to admitted that there was a problem.  However, when a friend called and
  239. said that his radio had a hum, they gave him the "PL up too high" story.
  240. And the dealer he bought the radio from told him that the PL was set loud
  241. on purpose because most "commercial repeaters" require a louder PL.
  242. What kind of load of BS is that?  First of all, the 733 isn't type
  243. accepted for commercial use.  Second, there is no difference between
  244. a "commercial repeater" and an "amateur repeater."  For the most
  245. part, amateur repeaters are Motorolas, GE's, Johnson's, etc.  Go figure.

  401. I am looking for any comments/comparisons of the Icom IC-281H versus the Yaesu
  402. FT-2500 or FT2200.  I am looking for a new 2M mobile rig as I find my HT to be
  403. very inconvenient (even hazardous) to use while mobile.  I am leaning towards
  404. the Yaesu only because of the backlit DTMF microphone (also, I am happy with 
  405. my FT-530 HT).  I would appreciate any first-hand use comments and/or advice.

  444. I don't have any answers, but I have noticed the strange beeping. It is 
  445. somewhat irritating and perplexing.
  446.  
  447. I suspect the squelch not functioning as effectively is due to AM detection
  448. versus FM detection. I usually just bump my squelch setting up to 3 or 4
  449. when monitoring the aircraft band.

  490. The wide decimal point indicates that you are doing a A3E
  491. demodulation instead of F3E.  Have no idea what the
  492. beeping is.
